Replacing a HUB/CAS Server w/o Downtime

$

Because of OS level issues we're having with our only HUB/CAS server I've been asked to stage a replacement and get everyone cut over to it with no downtime.

I have loaded an OS on the new server and installed Exchange 2010 and provisioned the HUB/CAS role on the box.    I've never done an "in place" cut in like this before so I'm concerned about what the next steps are.    To add to the complication the old server's NetBIOS name is "MAIL" and I want to reuse that name.    Any guidance?

Exchange 2010 Out of Office - Not Working (Server is currently unavailable; Try again later)

Hello.

A client has migrated to Exchange 2010 from Exchange under Windows NT Server, and then jumped to Exchange 2010.

For the most part, all is functional. After a bit of a struggle to get autodiscovery working, with SRV records, Free/Busy data, etc., Out of Office ceased to function. The Out of Office began to malfunction after server-side changes were made to correct the Autodiscover features needed for Free/Busy, OWA, etc.

Initially, new Outlook profiles were created under the original Windows accounts and the popup 'Your Out of Office settings cannot be displayed, because the server is currently unavailable. Try again later.'

We've opted to try a new Windows profile and recreate the Outlook profile. Initially, right after creating the Outlook profile (using Outlook 2007 connecting to Exchange 2010 Stadnard), clicking on Out of Office Assistant, Outlook hesitates, and was in a limbo of retrieving information from the server. After about 2-3 minutes, it failed with the popup message.

Testing the autoconfiguration settings via Ctrl+Shift+Click on the Exchange icon on the dock, everything looks perfect, all Successful and no issue at all.

I've had some good folks on this forum assist us with Autodiscover and split DNS fixes (using a local domain of .local and an outside domain of .com for SSL certificate popups), so we're wondering if this is causing some issues as well.

We are using Exchange 2010 Standard SP1 on Windows Server 2008 R2. Also, during the default intervals at 1am or 5am, the OAB does not automatically download to the clients, causing them to have a stale/old OAB and in turn, causing Free/Busy to not display info when creating resources in the calendars.

Is Autoconfigure misconfigured that is causing all of these issues?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Issue mounting exchange 2010 active DB when there was a storage failure

$

Hi,

For my setup the mountdialoverride is set to lossless which will prevent passive copy to auto mount the DBs when the active copy losses its storage. So the active copy will be dismounted and all other copy will be failed and disconnected. Well its fine for me as per settings, but when the storage was back online, the active copy still shows as dismounted and all other passive copy is "failed and disconnected" state.

i have tried to manually mount the active DB and i get the below error highlighted in bold (Event ID: 3154)....

Active Manager failed to mount database DAG1-DB1 on server server1. Error: An Active Manager operation failed. Error: The database action failed. Error: An error occurred while trying to select a database copy for possible activation. Error: The database 'DAG2-JournalDB' was not mounted because errors occurred either while validating database copies for possible activation, or while attempting to activate another copy.

An Active Manager operation failed. Error: Database 'DAG1-DB1' on server 'server1' cannot be mounted due to a previous error: At '24/12/2012 12:13:32' the Exchange store database 'DAG1-DB1' copy on this server appears to be inconsistent with the active database copy or is corrupted. For more details about the failure, consult the Event log on the server for other storage and "ExchangeStoreDb" events. A successful failover restored service.  If you have addressed the underlying problem, or if you have decided to attempt to mount the database despite this error, the mount operation may be attempted by using the '-Force' parameter of the Mount-Database cmdlet..

since i dint had enough time to run eseutil /mh or /p to check and repair the DB, i just run the mount command with -force parameter as suggested in the error above. it worked fine and the DB was up and running and seems no data loss.

Does anyone know what does -force parameter does? is it safe to use in case of circular logging? will it truncate the exiting uncommitted transaction logs? any data loss if so how much it can be?

any issue using the -force parameter if linear logging is enabled?

Any other suggestion to handle this kind of failure?

Thanks.

VSS Copy Backup vs VSS Full Backup

Hi guys,

Okay, so I think I understand the difference between the two, however I'm unsure of which one to use for Exchange 2010. Different websites seem to be telling me different things. Should I use VSS Copy or VSS Full backup when trying to backup my exchange server?

By the way, this server hosts Exchange Hub Transport, Mailbox and Active Directory.

Many thanks,

Ben

Add new HUB servers to existing Exchange 2010 deployment

Hi,

I need to deploy additional servers with HUB roles into existing configuration.

I'm pretty confident with most of the steps, however one thing that I'm not sure about it is the transaction logs and DB.

Do I need to copy the existing files from the other servers into the new ones or will I be fine with new files that will be created on the existing servers.

At the end of the deployment, I am going to take down the existing servers so only the new ones will work.

Now, We are planning to implement Exchange 2010 servers in parent domain and migrate the exchange server 2003 users from child domains to parent domain.

Could you please let me know best practice approach to do the migration and share the technical challenges and potential issues related to exchange and AD if you have.

Exchange 2010- sending emails to external email address to a group

$

Hai,

Can any one please give me the adivce how to do? If it is possible kindly help me

I am using exchange 2010. I need to restrict sending emails to external email address with limit (1MB) for only few users. But it should not effect to the internal emails.

Hidden attachments

$

Hi,

I am encountering an odd problem in an Exchange 2010 (v14.1 Build 218.15) environment with attachments that do not appear in an email client for internal users. Outlook 2010 is used.

Example: External user sends an email with an Excel document as an attachment. Email in recipients inbox has the paperclip icon indicating there is an attachment, but no attachment appears in the email preview pane. Email is opened into its own window and no attachment is visible. File -> Save Attachments lists no attachments.

User logs in to OWA with same result. No attachment visible.

If we forward to an internal user (on same Exchange server) they see no attachment, however the size of the email is always constant, indicating that the attachment is still there.

We forward the email to an external user and the attachment is visible to that user. We can then forward the email back and the attachment is then visible on the forwarded email.

There must be something up with the email that means attachments aren't visible, even when forwared internally. Switching views doens't help, or conversation view. Even more odd that it is not visible in OWA....

Any ideas welcome....

Updating to SP2 - another AD Site

Hi,

I have an 4 Exchange Server 2010 in my AD 2008 R2 environment.

The 2 of Exchange Servers 2010(CAS/HUB and Mailbox) are in a datacenter site that has one aditional DC (Writeble) and the 2 others Exchange Server 2010 are in another DC site tha has the PDC and Schema DC FMSO.

When I go to install SP2 in the CAS/HUB in the Exchange server 2010 that is not in the PDC and the Schema DC site the error bellow appears:

Setup needs to contact the Active Directory schema master but this computer is not in the same Active Directory site as the schema master (PR).

Click here for help... http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=30939&l=en&v=ExBPA.14&id=2376fec1-b9ce-44db-beb6-cb9ac4788988

To solve the problem must I change the Subnet configuration, in AD Sites and Services, from the CAS/HUB server to put them in the PDC and Schema DC site?

Thanks for now.

Error 'Unable to make connection to the server' when trying to migrate from Exchange 2003

I am having an issue migrating mailboxes from an Exchange 2003 server to Exchange 2010 in another forest. I've ran ADMT to start the migration, and am not ready to test the Exchange move.

The prepare-mailbox works fine. It's the move mail command that does not.

The commands I am running are:

$LocalCredentials = Get-Credential
$RemoteCredentials = Get-Credential

.\Prepare-MoveRequest.Ps1 -Identity test1 -RemoteForestDomainController dc.olddomain.com -RemoteForestCredential $RemoteCredentials -LocalForestDomainController dc.newdomain.com -LocalForestCredential $LocalCredentials -UseLocalObject -Verbose

New-MoveRequest -Identity test1 -TargetDatabase 'Mailbox Database 1' -remoteGlobalCatalog 'dc.olddomain.com' -remoteCredential $RemoteCredentials -TargetDeliveryDomain newdomain.com -RemoteLegacy -verbose

The error I get is:

Running in verbose mode shows that is fails when 'loading source mailbox info". I would assume it's on the Exchange 2003 server, and not the source domain controller.

Troubleshooting, I saw most people who've receiving this error were due to the FQDN or Netbios name not being resolved. I don't have this issue, as both domain names are in DNS Suffix for all NICS. I can ping vie both, no problem.

All accounts I am using are the domain Administrators accounts with proper access to exchange on both ends.

I don't see any other errors pointing to an issue.

Hi,

I've just transitioned to exchange 2010 from exchange 2003.

the exchange 2003 is still operational until i see that everything's working ok. I've moved all the mailboxes to the new exchange 2010 database but ONE user is complaining he's getting a sporadic NDR.

according to what i've digged up is that most probable that the problem is in his laptop. When he's in the company he doesn't have problems sending mail to internal user. only when he is outside the compant eg, home public wifi then he receives a lot of these NDR's.

he's using outlook 2010 configured with HTTPS over RPC. connected his old archive PST.

what i've done already:

cleared his cache of addresses. - didn't help

created a new outlook profile (don't remember if i created a new OST or might have connected to the old OST) - didn't help

worked without cached exchange mode - didn't help

when at home he connected to the internal network via VPN and that seemed to reduce the NDR's but still getting them.

OWA works ok.

what am i missing? it's driving him and me nuts.

Thanks in advance.
