"One or more users currently use a mailbox store on this server"

Uninstalling the last (only) Exchange server from a domain at the end of a migration to 2010. I have followed all the steps of things to remove (RUS/PFs/routing-groups/connectors/etc.) I have deleted the pub and priv information stores as well. But when I choose remove on the exchange setup I am getting the message about there being mailboxes on the server. I find that quite odd since there are no stores whatsoever left although I do have the EDB files physically on the disk still. I have restarted the services, even rebooted. I waited 24 hours for AD to learn/replicate about this. I have read the technet articlehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/924170, and found no results indicating a mailbox on anything other than the 2010 server. I tried creating a new private store and removing the system mailbox and trying again...same error.

I am assuming this is going to require ADSIEdit, but I'm not going to experiment with that (!) and even searching for users with information about the old server failed I would not know what to look for. Please help, I want this machine turned off and removed from the datacenter, but have read that it MUST be uninstalled gracefully to remove attributes from AD so I'm stuck.
