Assign a retention policy to an Archive database?

Am I being stupid?

This is in a Exchange 2010 SP2 RU5 test environment FYI.

There is a requirement for a 7 year retention on mail in the archive storage.

There is no requirement for messages to be automatically moved into the archive, users will drag from their pst files into their online archive and then from their MB when they want.  The archive mailboxes are to be stored on a dedicated Mailbox database, that would be housed on slower SAN disks.

So my logic is:

Create a Retention Policy tag for 2555 days and add this to a new Retention policy;

Apply this retention policy to the dedicated Archive Mailboxe database.  Therefore as users become "Archive enabled", the archive MB will be created on the dedicated ardhive MB database and the policy will be applied.

I've tried using commands such as:

Get-Mailbox –Database “Archiving” | Set-Mailbox –RetentionPolicy “7 Year Retention Policy”

Then I check a mailbox that has been archive enabled,  (Properties\Mailbox Settings\MRM\Properties and am expecting to see the "Apply Retention Policy" checked with my 7 year policy applied (and probably greyed), but no.

As with many topics across the interent, some folk say you can do this, others say you can't.

Am I being stupid?   Help me Obi-Wan-Exchangers, you're my only hope! :)
