Slow Relay for Bulk eMail since migrating from Exchange 2003 to 2010

Hi,

I'm having a problem with my organisations bulk mailshots since migrating from Exchange 2003 to 2010.

We have a mailing list of about 31,000 people who have requested updates on events we run. We have a custom built database to handle this and it relays through Exchange to send out these emails.

When we were using Exchange 2003 we found it took about 10 minutes for all 31,000 mails to be sent out. Since changing to 2010 it now takes about 50 minutes which is a big inconvenience.

We use a smarthost (messagelabs) and it is still configured the same as it was for Exchange 2003, no changes at all.

I have tried the following:

Set ReceiveConnector (Specific Connector tied to Source IP of Database System):

  • MaxAcknowledgmentDelay to 0
  • MessageRateSource to None
  • MaximumInboundConnectionPercentagePerSource to 75

Set Send Connector Limits

  • Maximum Concurrent Outbound Connections to 2000
  • Maximum Concurrent Outbound Connections to 2000

If my maths is correct, for Exchange 2010 emails: 50 minutes = 3000s and 31000 messages divided by 3000s is roughly 10 emails a second?

For Exchange 2003 we were getting: 10 minutes = 600s and 31000 messages divided by 600 is 51 emails a second.

Is there some other setting I can tweak to increase this? Its a far more powerful server than the 2003 one as sitting on all the same infrastructure, same firewall, network switch, same smarthost etc.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Thanks

Jonathan
