Mail Routing

Hello!

After reading this article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998825%28v=exchg.141%29.aspx I have a question regarding a mail routing in Exchange 2010. I can't understand the pictures in theHUB site section (and it doesn't matter whether the Hub site exists or not): if I see the four sites (A, B, C, D) linked as A-B-C-D with the FOUR corresponding route costs (15-15-10-10 respectively) I think that these routes (A-B, B-C, C-D, D-A) are the only routes possible in this scenario. So when a message is sent from the Site A to Site D there's only two possible routes: A-B-D or A-C-D. Depending on the aggregate link cost a message will follow either A-B-D or A-C-D path.

I don't understand why the not correctly placed HUB site causes the message be routed directly from A to D - such link does not exist on the picture. Why in this case the message does not flow A-C-D as that route is the cheapest? Do I miss anything?

Thank you in advance,

Michael
