Windows Authentication is not working for internal OWA

$

Hi,

I have two Exchange 2010 Servers.

When I try to open OWA internal with https://exchange01.domain.local/owa

I get prompted for user + password although I have configured owa authentication on the servers with:

X Use one ore more std. auth. methods:

X Integrated Windows authentication

I restartet iis and the servers as well but no changes.

How can I get rid of the prompt and automatically get logged in?

(Users and Exchange are in the same domain.local Domain, no certificate issues because
I used our CA RootCert for issuing certs for the exchange servers and the Root CA is trusted
by all clients,servers)

Thanks!

Exchange 2010 uninstallation showing roles that are not installed on Server.

Hi Guys,

I am trying to uninstall a Exchange 2010 HUB server from my domain.

It was originally installed with just the Hub role and management tools.

Yet when I use Program and fetures to uninstall I am also shown mailbox role and CAS role. I uninstalled the HUB role which is now removed, but do I need to uninstall Mailbox and CAS roles? and why are they showing up as installed ?

It should be noted that there are no Microsoft Exchange services on this system one the Hub role was uninstalled.

How do I check if these roles have intergrated with AD.

Thanks for your help in advance craig.

Do Retention Policy Tags cause Outlook to Resync?

$

We have 5000 Exchange 2010 mailboxes.  We are preparing to apply new Retention Policy Tags.  Currently we are using Managed Folder Policies inherited from Exchange 2007.  There are no longer any Exchange 2007 servers in our forest.  The new Retention Policies are the same as the Managed Folder Policies, which is to delete messages that are more than 1 year old.

My question is, when applying the new Retention Policy Tags, will this cause Outlook to perform a full resynchronization of the OST file, or will it just process metadata to apply the new tags?

Exchange Server Inheritable Permissions Needs to be Applied in order for Active Sync to function when a Mailbox is moved from Exchange 2003 to 2010

When a mail box is moved from exchange 2003 to exchange 2010, Exchange Server inheritable permissions needs to be added in order for Active Sync to function.

The is best described here http://blog.nick.mackechnie.co.nz/post/2009/11/20/Exchange-2010-Active-Sync-Issue.aspx

Once the mailbox is moved local users of Outlook and Remote users using OWA via browser function correctly, however, BYOD users i.e. iPhone, Android etc. are not able to connect their device until inherited permissions for Exchange Server is applied on the users Active Directory account.

Is there a way for this permission to be part of the move process? We have a way to automate mailbox moves and having to go back and manually applied this permission is circumventing automating the move process.

network name my_dag is not online please check the IP address configuration for the DAG is correct

When I create a new DAG and add the member servers I aways get:

Network name "myDAG" is not online.  Please check that the IP address configuration for the database availability group is correct.

The environment constists of two Exchange servers, both running HT/CAS/MB roles.  This is a smaller environment and the primary purpose of having two servers is to have some database redundancy with DAG.  Exchange server A and B have 2 NIC's one for the MAPI network and one for the replication network.  I picked the witness server which is a member server and the witness directory gets created and populated automatically (I added the necessary Exchange group to the local administrators group on the witness server).  I give the DAG an IP address which is on the MAPI network and it creates a DNS record automatically.  Everything in EMC looks fine.

But when I run a validation it fails.  And in some cases the validation tool cannot resolve the DAG name.  When the tests are able to run the failures are:

List Cluster Network Information - Failed to connect to the service manager on "EXCH_B".  The RPC server is unavailable.

Validate Cluster Service and Driver Settings - Failed to connect to the service manager on "EXCH_B"  The RPC server is unavailable.

Any suggestions?

Permissions inheritance block on Exchange Org object in ExPDA

$

Installing 2010 in co-existence with 2003.

I was provided with a ExPDA report before we ran the /PrepareLegacy /PrepareAD / PrepareDomain commands and this report only had the usual link state suppression messages.

I ran the ExPDA personally afterwards and there was an update so updated it and there is the permissons inheritance block alert:

Access control list (ACL) inheritance is blocked for the Exchange Organization object (CN=Email Environment,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=com).

I have seen this before running the schema updates in the past and just allow inheritance as per the MS articles and all is well, I have not, however, seen it AFTER running the Schema updates.  Questions:

  1. No Exchange 2010 servers have been deployed yet as it is a staged approach
  2. Why was this not on the ExPDA before?  Was it the update that brings this check in or has it occurred because of the schema update?  I normally see this error before updating the schema and just fix it before the schema update - would fixing it AFTER break anything?
  3. Is it a requirement to run the /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions command again after fixing this, or can I just enable inheritance within Exchange 2003 before installing the first 2010 box and that is enough?  I need to apply the registry fix and reboot 2003 first so I cannot see the security tab at the moment.

Exchange 2003/2010 co-existence keeping same namespace - how do you test?

$

Just wondering how people test the following as part of normal installs?

  1. Exchange 2003 uses webmail.domain.com for OWA
  2. Exchange 2010 will use the same namespace
  3. When you install 2010 you specify the ExternalCASServerDomain as webmail.domain.com
  4. You then flip over the DNS records (after setting up legacy.domain.com, etc which I know about) and 2010 proxies the requests

But what about between 3 and 4?  How do you test the 2010 installs and make sure all is well?  In the past it has been a requirement to bring up a new namespace so you just run both alongside each other, but given that webmail.domain.com points to 2003, how can you test 2010 in the interim?

Do most people:

  1. Switch DNS straight over to 2010 after configuring it and test all settings with mail flowing through 2010 - if it requires a reboot so be it, OWA to 2003 will just be affected
  2. Install 2010 under a DNS namespace of webmailtest.domain.com, get everything configured and working under test accounts and then go around renaming all the virtual directory settings to webmail.domain.com and then flick the DNS over

How do others do the testing phase before moving the webmail.domain.com connection to be proxied by 2010?

Windows 8 Mail App/ Exchange Active Sync / OWA question

$

I have mobile users that are currently using OWA in IE9 on Win7...

I am testing a Windows 8 OS and have setup the Mail App using my Exchange account using the Exchange Active Sync option... the problem is this isn't anywhere near as robust as OWA... i.e., I cannot see my Archived mail, nor can I see the GAL...

Are these options available, and I just need to set them up somewhere, or is it better to just set them up with an OWA shortcut on the 'start' screen in Win8?

Thanks!

issue changing routing group connector exchange 2010

while running.....set-routinggroupconnector -identity "exchange routing group (dwbgzmfd01qnbjr)\2010 rgc" -targettransportservers server.example.com

I receive the following error:

target servers cant be in the same routing group as the source servers. the source servers belong to the routing group 'exchange routing group (dwbgzmfd01qnbjr)

do I need to add the target transport servers and source transport servers in the command together?

I am just wanting to decommission the existing Target Transport Servers and replace with a new one.

Custom Quota Messages

I've been able to create curtom messages, this hasn't been a problem. it's some of the other things I was hoping to be able to change but not sure how to or if you even can:

1 - Can you customize the subject of the quota message, instead of just getting "Your Mailbox is Almost Full" or the other stock subjects?

2 - Can you change the From address that the quota message includes.  It's stupid in that in Outlook/OWA it says it's from "Microsoft Outlook" and in an IMAP client (yes we have lots of these users), the From address shows up asMicrosoftExchange234bb..32charactersATmycompanyDOTcom; would be nice to just have all of them sent as postmaster(or whatever)@mycompany.com (a real friggin account).  I've tried to use a Transport Rule to change the From in the header but it won't let me do that.

3 - Long shot, but any way to remove the html graph that gets displayed?

Problem we're having is that we get numerous phishing emails sent to our users, and most of them lately involve quota warnings threatening to close a users mailbox if they don't click the link and give their user names and passwords, which many of our users are happy to do, then the spammers get busy with those credentials sending out junk thru our servers.

Thanks for any feedback.

Installing Exchange - Scripting Agent error

$

We have Exchange 2010 with the most recent patches. Every time I try to install Exchange, including the Exchange management tools, I get the "$error.Clear(); Set-WERRegistryMarkers..." error. With the asssistance of Mike Pfeiffer's blog I discovered that I can successfully install Exchange by first running the following:

Disable-CmdletExtensionAgent "Scripting Agent"

I then reverse the setting after the installation. This is fine, but I'm trying to get my helpdesk staff to use thier desktops to support AD and Exchange. Disabling the Scripting Agent every time a support person wants to install the Exchange tools is a hassle.

Is anyone else experincing this? Why is the installation not smarter? Is there a better workaround?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi, first off, very sorry, am new to this, please take pity on a stranger!

I have successfully installed a server I our company and set up exchange server 2010.

However, mail from AOL email addresses doesn't reach us, and we can't send to AOL addresses either.

I am told that I need to set up a reverse DNS on the ip address, I don't understand what this means.

Please could someone tell me in idiot speak, how to do this? I'd be really grateful.

Thanks

some users recieving blank emails

This just started happening last month. Some users are receiving emails from in-house and external users with the body of the message showing nothing. It doesn't happen all the time but it seems like it's getting worse. Right now there are three users out of 40 that are experiencing this issue.

One of the messages today was send to 4 internal staff and one of the users received it with no content in the body of the message, the other three had the message.

We are not sure what is going on and what to look for

Is it possible that GFI ME might be causing this issue? Tonight, I am restarting the server as it has not been restarted for about 3 months. Nothing showing up in the logs.

Our server is running Windows 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010

Any ideas?

Any and all help would be much appreciated.

Changing Exchange mailalias - possible gotchas?

$

There are 3000 or so mailboxes with aliases that are all over the place.  Some have spaces, some have invalid characters which won't work in 2010, some are firstname lastname, some are samaccountname, etc.

I am planning to clean these up so that:

  1. They are 2010 compatible (moving from 2003) so spaces and invalid characters need to be removed (I have a script to do this so that they can actually move to 2010 in the first place!)
  2. As a second task, try to get some unity between the aliases when we move them across so going forward all accounts are the same format

What are the possible gotchas for changing the mail alias attribute?  The recipient policies are based off firstname.lastname and do not reference the alias, so that is the main point covered, but I want to check if people have come across anything else?

I am looking at moving to having the alias match the SAMAccountName attribute so that there are no issues with POP3 or IMAP mailboxes, so what will the end user see?  Clients are 2003 and 2010.  Currently Exchange 2003 going to 2010.

Public Folder Issues

Hello everyone, we are running two exchange 2010 servers.  We are migrating from one to the other.  For some reason our public folders are not accessible now but in exchange console we can view the folder structure.

I have a suspicion that for some reason the public folder replica is pointing to the other server.  Does anyone know the command to see which server the public folder replica is assigned to?

We turned on replication a while ago, had issues and fixed it.  For some reason issues are back now.

Thank you,

Query about using Mail Tips to warn when a attachment is over a certain size - but still send.

$

Hi,

My organisation doesn't have any size limits configured for sending or receiving emails, the business dicates that we can't prevent emails being sent. Inevitabley, we've had instances where a user has sent an email of 10Gb+ which causes various problems.

I'd like have a mail tip warn the user when they attach a large file but crucially I still want them to be able to send the email. I know it can be done in Outlook using VBA but I'd like to configure it on Exchange, don't thik it possible but I gratefully receive any bright ideas.

Thanks, Ulsterfry.
