How long does a database move take?

I'm looking to move a database to a different drive letter on the SAME Exchange server. For ex - From H: drive to I: drive. I am not moving the logs, they will stay in its current location. Based on your experiences, how long does a database move take? I know it depends on many factors but I need to know an estimated downtime for a database that's 350GB's (moving to a different drive on the same server). This is Exchange 2010 and on a virtual server. Do you have any examples of similar size databases (or any examples) that you've moved and how long?

Thank you in advance!

Mail contacts with external addresses deleting every day

Hello

I'm running into a problem that i can't seem to figure out. I am kind of a noob to Exchange so this may be a simple solution (i have searched around and not found anything that worked). Our AD/Exchange works like this: we have several domains that are in different forests and there are no trusts. When we create a user account, we modify a custom attribute and that creates a mail contact in the other domains so they can see the user in the GAL. The issue i am having, is that we have a set of users that are using another external address, and when i create a mail contact for them, there seems to be a rule somewhere that is deleting them (i'm assuming because the email address isn't "allowed"). I added the domain as an accepted domain but the contacts were still deleted. Is there somewhere where specific email addresses are allowed? I did not see anything anywhere in the Exchange console.

Thanks

I have a distributed group created called tech.support@domain.com and I have a user added to that group whenever an email is send to that group the user receives the email . But when he tries to send email as tech.support@domain.com the email is not delivered the NDR shows this error: Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups: You can't send a message on behalf of this user unless you have permission to do so. Please make sure you're sending on behalf of the correct sender, or request the necessary permission. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk.

Steps Performed:

1) In AD users security properties the user is been granted send as permission, also using the EMS the Add-ADPermission "distributed group name " -user " username" -Extendedrights "SendAs" command has been run

2) Information store service has been restarted to clear the exchange cache

3) Delete the offline address book folder under “C:\Users\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Offline Address Books”
Open Outlook and let it download new OAB. Still doens't work

4) On the distributed group mailbox >delivery options the user is been given sendonbehalf permission

Any thoughts on the same

SP2 upgrade failed on Hub Transport - lots of problems

Ok, tried doing a SP2 upgrade on an exchange 2010 server running server 2008 r2.

Failed at the hub transport step of the upgrade with the restart of service host service.  Failed the install.  After that a mess of Exchange services are set to disabled.   Googled the correct status of all services and set them manually and after restart I can send email inbound and outbound without a problem but OWA, ACtivesync and management console will not load up.

Event viewer is full of event id 2080 regarding Exppw.dll failing to load

When I try to load up the management console It errors out with an error that it coulnd't connect to powershell using kerbos authentication failed: connecting to remote server failed with teh following error message: The WinRM client cannot process the request.  It cannot determine the content of hte http response from the destination computer.

Receive connector performance

Hi all,

I have a problem with Exchange server performance in accepting SMTP email in high volume from other internal servers.

We have a requirement to send large volumes of email in a timely manner and the servers responsible for generating these emails do not seem to be able to send emails through the exchange environment as fast as they can through other email platforms (i.e. MS SMTP server).

Sending 1000 emails from a powershell script takes around 120 seconds if sent directly to our exchange transport server. Tarpitting and message acknowledgement have been set to 0. If the same 1000 emails are sent to a separate server with IIS Virtual SMTP service enabled and then routed through to the exchange transport server, it takes around 20 seconds.

Looking at the logs, it seem that when sending directly to the exchange server a full handshake takes place for each email whereas the SMTP server is able to process the messages in bulk - meaning its the 'handshake' process thats causing the delay. Owing to the neature of the emails involved they will need to be processed one at-a-time. Is there any way I can improve the performance of exchange in receiving these emails or will I need to introduce the SMTP server for all the high volume stuff?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Matt

Exchange 2010, 2010 + Outlook / OWA - incorrectly processed meeting requests.

Hello.

We have Exchange Server 2010, SP3 UR10. Clients Outlook 2010 connected to Exchange server via native "Exchange" protocol. We have a problem with a appointments/meeting request coming from external customers using Lotus Notes 9.

Appointments/meeting request come from such clients as HTML email with an ics attachment. When you open attachments calendar event are created, but it is necessary that Outlook correctly handle such letters and recognize them as an invitation to a meeting.

This behavior only when the Outlook 2010 connected to Exchange server via native "Exchange" protocol or using OWA. Example of such email:

But when clients connets to Exchange server via IMAP protocol such emails are shown in right view - as appointments/meeting. Example:

How can i correct behavior of Outlook connected via native "Exchange" protocol?

P.S. Sorry for my bad english. :)

Distribution List Restriction - Issue

We have a restricted distribution list that we have setup so 2 users can send to the list. I've added the user by going to EMC |  Recipient Configuration | DL List name | Mail flow Settings| Message delivery restrictions. This was done a week ago. When the user attempted to send to the list this morning she received an NDR. I ran a delivery report and sure enough the message failed to send with the status code 550 5.7.1.

Your message can't be delivered because delivery to this address is restricted.

550 5.7.1 RESOLVER.RST.NotAuthorized; not authorized

My question is, is there something else I have to do to allow her to send to the dl list?

Hello

I am running Exchange 2010 with Outlook 2010 on the clients.  There are a couple of users that are receiving two meeting request - one destined for them and the other one that says 'Received for Joe Bloggs'.  I have checked the delegate settings for both Joe Bloggs and the receiver but I cannot find where this setting is coming from.

Any ideas?

Issue with Microsoft Exchange VSS writers timing out and causing exchange backups to fail

Hi,

I am having an issue with exchange writers on an SBS2011 server. We use a cloud backup solution and every time we run the back the system state and files and folders job completes fine, but we have a job to backup exchange and this is failing as the VSS writer for Microsoft Exchange keeps timing out. I have spoke with the Vendor of the backup software and they are saying that this is a microsoft issue as it is the exchange writers that are timing out.

The result of VSSadmin List Writers shows the following for Microsoft Exchange Writer:

Writer name: 'Microsoft Exchange Writer'
   Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}
   Writer Instance Id: {2762a818-c18e-421c-879e-77c38bff86de}
   State: [9] Failed
   Last error: Timed out

This back up has been failing for quite some time and would really appreciate any insight on what could be causing the vss writers to time out. If I restart the information store service the writer will return stable and no error, the backup then may succeed once, but most times fails again.

Thank you.

Exchange 2010 sp3 licensing problem

Dir Sirs,

we are ready to perform an exchange upgrade from 2003 to 2010 by our customer. This customer has two exchange server: one is a front end server and the other is the backend. This customer has a lot of mailbox databases. So in order to keep the same structure we would like to perform the installation as follows:

1) the (ex frontend server) wil be an exhange 2010 with CAS and HT transport installed:

2) the (ex backend server) will be an exchange 2010 with MB role.

As written before this customer has a lot different mailbox databases, so we will need to install an exchange server 2010 ENTERPRISE on the mailbox server; But what kind of version should we use in the CAS+HT server ? (standard or enterprise)?

Thanks

Failing to install Rollup updates on Exchange 2010

Hi

I'm hoping someone can help me here?

We are currently running Exchange 2010 SP3 14.03.0123.003 on a Windows Server 2012.

I'm tried applying the update Rollup 10 via Windows Update, in which it failed.

I then downloaded and manually ran Exchange2010-KB3049853-x64-en in which it failed.

" Microsoft Exchange Server - Update 'Update Rollup 5-v2 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2 (KB2785908) 14.2.328.10' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Windows Installer can create logs to help troubleshoot issues with installing software packages"

I then ran it against CMD with Admin rights and got the same error. I have since ran it using the Exchange2007-KB3049853-x64-EN.msp /lxv c:\Rollup.log

 I get the following

I haven't put the full log in as I'm sure there's enough information here but I just can't grasp what is I need to do to get this installed?

Any advice would be kindly appreciated.

Thanks

Exchange 2010 DAG Witness Directory Failure after change.

Hello there,

We had an error last week with the original witness directory (CAS/HUB Server) and we had to delete it. We created a new witness directory on the CAS/HUB Server, shared it (Full Access to DAG Computer account was given) Exchange Trusted Subsytem permission given, etc.

Then we ran: set-databaseavailabilitygroup <dag_name> -witnessserver <fqdn of cas/hub> -witnessdirectory c:\new_witness_directory

But we´re receiving this error: WARNING: File share \\fqdn of cas/hub\dagname already exists, however directory c:\oldwitnessdirectory is different from witness directory c:\newwitnessdirectory. Until this problem is corrected, the database availability group may have increased vulnerability to failures. To correct this problem, delete the existing file share and use the Set-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup cmdlet to retry the operation.

If we run: get-dag -status | fl * we can see:

WitnessShareInUse                      : InvalidConfiguration

Note: We deleted the old witness directory through Failover Cluster Manager, and created the new directory as well through FCM, then ran the set-databaseabailavilitygroup..... but somehow Exchange still sees the OLD witness directory..

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Public Folders in DAG - One is much larger than the other

2 years ago we migrated to Exchange 2010 in a DAG setup (from a 2003 environment). This was done with the assistance of a 3rd party vendor who no longer is available.

When it was set up we had configured two public folder stores: Public Folders 1 on SERVER1 and Public Folders 2 on SERVER2.

Historically we have not used the Public Folders much except for a few shared calendars, but earlier this year we began migrating data from a company we purchased.  They have quite a bit of content in their public folder store (they were using it for mail archiving apparently) and I have noticed that over the several months that I've been doing this only one of the public folder databases (Public Folders 1) is growing in size.  Public Folders 1 is currently over 100GB while Public Folders 2 is only about 150MB.  Aren't these supposed to be equal size?  I would imagine that if SERVER1 went down then none of the public folder data would be available since there isn't a copy of them on SERVER2.

Is there something that may not have been configured properly to ensure the availability of public folder data on both servers?  Thank you.

Moving item from Mailbox to Archive changes Created date stamp

We have recently started looking at the Archive capabilities of our Exchange 2010 Enterprise server (currently atUpdate Rollup 10 for Exchange Server 2010 SP3).  I have only turned on Archiving for a single mailbox, mine, for testing.  I finally have all the Policies and Tags working. But, unfortunately, I found the "ELCAssistantCalendarTaskRetentionEnabled" workaround for the Calendar and Tasks handling after all of my Tasks were archived.

The "unfortunate" part is that the Created date for every Task was changed to the date and time the Tasks were moved to the Archive database.  After more testing I found:

  • This does not affect just Tasks, but all message types... it just revealed itself with Tasks because that's a field I added to the Simple List view
  • This affects the Modified and Created time stamps
  • Moving an Item between a PST archive and an Exchange hosted Mailbox does not change the time stamps
  • Moving an Item from an Exchange hosted archive to an Exchange hosted Mailbox does not change the time stamps
  • Moving an Item from an Exchange hosted Mailbox to an Exchange hosted Archive changes the time stamps

Questions:

  1. Is there a fix for this in 2010?
  2. We will be moving to Exchange 2013 or 2016 within a year.  Is this problem fixed in either version?
  3. Is there a utility that can change the Created and Modified dates to match the Received date?

Thank you
