Hi Experts!
Our client is already switched to exchange 2016 and they want now to decommission the old one which is exchange 2010 version. Now, I have some few question to discussed with the client before doing decom in exchange 2010. Can you also give us the procedure in decommissioning exchange 2010 as well.
1. What are the best practices and step by step procedure in decommissioning exchange 2010 ?
2. What are the prerequisites and requirements before initiating decom?
3. When you say, decommissioning exchange 2010 is it the whole exchange (database, Mailbox, Dag, all configuration etc.?)
4. Does it affect the exchange the current exchange 2016 ,Policy, AD security groups, Authentication) ?
5. Does it affect also the IP configuration on AD integration ?
6. How we can prevent data loss during decommission ?
7. Are you recommending to create send received connectors on the exchange to make it sure that no affect?
8. Check the arbitration to validate if system files are properly transferred.
9. Off/shutdown exchange 2010 then observe at least 1week to determine if they have some issue encounter.
Are you recommending the below procedure in decommissioning exchange 2010 ? Please advise ...
Manual Method of Exchange Server Decommission
Therefore, it is better to go for manual process of Exchange Server Decommission in order to continue working with the newer version smoothly. Here’s a quick look through the steps that will reverse all the changes occurred:
- Locate the Primary Domain Controller
- Open ADSIEDIT
- Right-click the ADSIEdit and proceed with Connect to
- Further to Connect to, go for the “Default Naming Context” option
-
You will find the following objects
DC=Domain,DC=Com -> OU=Microsoft Exchange Security Groups
DC=Domain,DC=Com -> CN=Microsoft Exchange System Objects - Simply delete these objects
- Again, Right-click the ADSIEdit and navigate to Connect to
- Go to the “Configuration” through Connect to
-
You will again find some objects to delete
CN=Configuration,DC=Domain,DC=Com -> CN=Services -> CN=Microsoft Exchange
CN=Configuration,DC=Domain,DC=Com -> CN=Services -> CN=Microsoft Exchange Autodiscover - Delete these as well
- Then, force the replication of Active directory
- And, your Exchange Server 2010 manual uninstallation will be completed
