EWS Authentication - OOF Your Out of Office settings cannot be displayed, because the server is currently unavailable

I have an issue with OOF since migrating from SBS2003 to SBS2011.

The public DNS of the mail system is mail.company.com

the internal DNS name is SRV1.company1.local

The external & internal address for OOF is https://mail.company.com/EWS/exchange.asmx

Every time I run Out Of Office agent on outlook on an Internal client I get "Your Out of Office settings cannot be displayed, because the server is currently unavailable"

I have created a DNS zone for company.com internally and created a host record for mail.

If I browse to https://mail.company.com/EWS/exchange.asmx on any domain joined machine using IE I get prompted for credentials, If I log in the XML is displayed fine, If it browse to the URL from the server I am not asked to authenticate and it works fine, If a user uses OWA it works fine, If a user connects externally using Outlook Anywhere it works fine.

I have Anonymous, Basic & Windows Authentication enabled.

My question is this, should browsing to the URL using IE prompt for credentials?, Is the problem being caused by an authentication issue because the domain name is different to that of the client using windows auth?

Has anyone got any tips/steps on how to troubleshoot this issue?

There is nothing in the event log on the client, the server or IE logs

I have tried disabling & enabling different authentication methods with no luck

I cannot change the internal URL of EWS to server1.company.local as that name is not included in the certificate plus I wish to use the external name.

Thanks
