we have recently started running into an issue where the catalogdata-... folder suddenly starts increasing in size on a Exchange 2010 SP2 database. the database size is 250GB and the catalog was about ~20gb but then it jumped to 60GB in a matter of minutes. I was thinking if this is caused by a master merge where the catalog can get really high. I don't see anything in the logs except saying a merge was complete.
We currently have only 300GB lun and I am guessing I will need to increase this to at least 400GB...enough for the database and catalog growth.
My question is that is there anything we can do to figure out why this is happening...or was it always happening and we are noticing it now since it causing database dismounts.
After the master merge does the catalog size decrease to a normal size again? does it matter if you are in a cluster?
And lastly if I disable the search index, that would only save me a few GBs but I will still need to get more space on the LUN for mail growth. But would impact OWA and mobile users.
