How long time to move replicas from EXC2003

$

As the title.

I have approximately 3MB of data in the public folders, including the system folders.

How long time should this take to move from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010.

Anyone that can estimate it?

EXCH2010 DB Recover question

EXCH2010 version

Had a storage hardware failure and log files became corrupt. /mh says dirty with log required 0x1955-0x196e. Log committed 0x196f.  Log file corruption occurs on 0x196c

I recovered a copy of the DB from backup and have brought it up to a clean state.

I have also made a copy of the corrupt DB and did a hard repair (eseutil /p) and it is in a clean state as well.  Currently defraging.

So I have two copies in clean state; one from back-up and one that has been hard repaired.  What is best option for bring DB back online:

1.) Replace corrupt DB with back-up copy

2.) Replace corrupt DB with repaired copy

If option 1 do I place log files in log directory that carries me from 1st log after last log committed up until the one right before corruption (eg 0x196b). Will the log files automatically replay when DB is mounted? Will queued mail wait for log replays before being processed?

If option 2 what is process for mounting repaired copy? Rename to current corrupt DB name, replace corrupt DB, clear log all files and mount? Any other steps?

Any help is appreciated.

OAB web distribution points for CAS arrays

$

I am troubleshooting an OAB download issue for our clients on OutlookAnywhere and need to confirm something. I haven't been able to get a firm answer one way or the other. In exchange 2010, should each CAS be enabled as a web distribution point for the OAB? Currently, we just have one that is a distribution point.

Background:

CAS array is behind a load balancer. When a client tries to download the OAB.xml file, bitsadmin shows that it can't find the oab.xml file. We have some users that can download it, but it fails for others who never get a new copy of the address book in Outlook 2013.

Thanks

Exchange 2010 BPA - Cluster TEMP Path

$

Similar questions asked before but I couldnt find an answer.. When the Ex2010 BPA gives a warning about the Temp folder needing to be moved to an alternative disk:

Cluster TEMP path on server X is set to the default location. For optimum performance, this path should point to a fast disk. Current TEMP path: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Temp.

But with a DAG, there is no 'cluster' service account, so how can the change be made?!

What should/can be an alternative for public folders?

Hi people!

Scenario:

Exchange 2010 SP3, Outlook 2013 on client side.

Users like to work with public folders especially because the share the same folder and then they drag & drop items to subfolders.

Now the plan in near future is to migrate Exchange 2010 to 2013.

We would like to stop using Public folders and we were wondering what alternatives does Exchange 2013 offers to us?

Users still need to be able to so the same folder, and see drag&drop changes to other folders.

Any advice?

i am using exchange 2010

i have a user that has a shared calendar and when they add entries in outlook the entry disappears after a few seconds.  this only happens to one individual.

here is what i know/tried

--if you take off cache mode or use owa things work

--only happens on shared calender which user is a full admin of

--upgraded to office 2013 and used 2010 too with same issue

Problems w/mailbox used as shared box

I created a new user mailbox that I then assigned both full access & send as permissions to for 2 users that already exist. However 2 issues:

1. New mailbox won't showup in global address book, did I miss something to public it?

2. When I test send mail to this user from outlook, when I hit send it displays a popup box asking which of the 2 users I assigned access to I wish to send the message to. I want it to goto both users shared folder for this mailbox automatically not ask who to send it to. The mailbox does showup in both of the users outlook.

Move Exchange Server 2010 SP1 databases and log files to another partition

$

My company has been running Exchange Server 2010 SP1 on virtual machine for almost three years. My colleague created this virtual machine (Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1) before Exchange Server installation with following partitions:

C partition - for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 OS (size 40 GB)

E partition - for Exchange Server 2010 SP1 databases and logs (size 410 GB)

Those two partitions are on the same virtual hard disk "next to one another" so I can not extend C partition which gets filled up with IIS logs (when C partition free space is under 10 GB I am backing up these logs with backup software and afterwards deleting them thus freeing up space on C partition). I have 2 databases (along with Public Folders) and size of these databases and their logs is around 235 GB.

Is it safe to move these databases and their logs to another partition which I would create on separate virtual hard disk for this purpose only and how much time this process might take since during this process databases would be dismounted and inaccessible to all users? He made big blunder in my opinion but I have to solve this.

Hi,

I'm currently getting ESE errors on MS Exchange 2010 SP1 running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Std.

It appears rather sporadically and I want to find out what it may be caused by and how it can be fixed.

I suspect VSS writer to be the culprit of the issue, but vssadmin list writers returns stable state and no errors. What else can be checked for VSS?

new-mailboxexportrequest - Mail Database to individual .pst files.

$

Hello All,

The Exchange Management Shell is killing me. I've gone through this forum pretty thoroughly as well as every site I can find with google with no real solution.

All I want to do is export my Mail Database out to individual .pst files. For example, If I had a database with an account called Eric and Eric-test and I ran the correct PS command it would export them out as eric.pst and eric-test.pst. I have about 300 accounts on my server with various names so I hoping to find a way to do all of them with a single command in PS.

I've already granted all the proper rights and can do individual accounts just fine, but that's not going to be very useful if I have to write a script that has a line for every single user individually. this is the command I've found:
Get-Mailbox -Database "mailbox database server" -ResultSize Unlimited | Export-Mailbox -PstFolderPath \\server\pstshare

but it errors on the Export-Mailbox portion of the command. I found the above command here:
http://www.exchangemaster.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=151&Itemid=1&lang=en

My guess is that the syntax has changed since that article was wrote.

I'm running an Exchange 2010 SP3 server that is still coexisting with my Exchange 2003 server until I can find a backup solution for the individual inboxes.

Any help would be wonderful
Thanks

[DAG] Log Files locked, Store crashing during Active DB Move

$
0
0

Running into an issue when moving the Active database from one one server to another.  I have encountered this same issue twice now.   The general chain of events is that I move some databases off of one of my mailbox servers onto a specific mailbox server.  I perform updates, etc on that server, then go to move the databases back over to the previous server.  While moving the databases, one of the database moves will fail.  In turn, the Store service will crash on the source server.  When I look at the logs of the Source and Target servers, I see that the Log files for the database on the Source server become locked, and do not allow to even be read.  Because of this, All active databases on that Source server fail over (because of store.exe crash), and the database on the target server has to come up without copying over all log files first.  When I perform these Active database moves, I am performing them in "lossless".

My setup is 2 CAS/HUB servers in an Array, and 3 Mailbox servers in a DAG.  The issue is happening when moving active databases from one mailbox server specifically, and has happened with multiple databases.

I began looking around the Application log on the Source server to try and determine what was locking the log files at the time of the Active DB move.

The only thing I have found was that the Mailbox Assistant was running at the time of the move.

My question then would be whether the mailbox assistant server would in any way be involved with the log files.  Possibly it has the files locked, did not release the lock, or did not release it in time?  Symantec Endpoint Protection is installed on the server, but I have exempted the exchange data drives from scans, as that had been causing some issues in the distant past.  When that would happen, I would see indications of SEP being involved in the file lock in the App log.

Thanks in advance for your help.

This event repeated 4 times

From what I see then it does eventually recover properly and copy the log files over.  Seems that once the Store restarts, then it resolves the file lock issue.

Can anyone assist me with where to start troubleshooting this issue to figure out what is causing the lock?  As I said, my only guess at this point is something with the Mailbox Assistant that was running at the time.

No Access to EMC or EMS - Resource-Exhaustion-Detected Error 2004 - Pagefile Configuration???

$

Hi all and thank you in advance for your help and shared knowledge.

I am experiencing problems accessing EMC or EMS in Exchange 2010. When trying to access EMC I receive the following error:

"The attempt to connect to http://myserver.domain/PowerShell using "Kerberos" authentication failed: Processing data from remote server failed with the following error message: The type initializer for 'Nested' threw an exception. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic."

When trying to access EMS:

"Processing data from remote server failed with the following error message: The type initializer for 'Nested' threw an exception. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic.

*CategoryInfo :OpenError: <System.Manageme....RemoteRunspace:RemoteRunspace> [], PSRemotingTransportException

*FullyQualifiedErrorId : PSSessionOpenFailed"

While looking through the event logs I find the following event corelated to the above errors.

Event ID 2004 Resource-Exhaustion-Detect

"Windows successfully diagnosed a low virtual memory condition. The following programs consumed the most virtual memory: store.exe (7352) consumed 8072130560 bytes, w3wp.exe (7332) consumed 684277760 bytes, and Microsoft.Exchange.RpcClientAccess.Service.exe (5004) consumed 612663296 bytes."

This is where it gets a little screwy. Recently I moved the pagefile off of C: and moved it to D: (because of disk sizing) the pagefile deleted properly and I was then able to reallocate to D: no problem. With this configuration when logging into the server a message would pop up saying "Windows created a temporary paging file on your computer because of a problem that occurred with your paging file configuration when you started your computer. The total paging filesize for all disk drives may e somewhat larger than the size you specified." Funny thing is when I search for pagefile.sys it is in the D: directory and is the correct size.

Over the weekend I split the pagefile putting 1GB on C: and 23GB on D: everything allocated properly and the error message at login was gone. After a reboot I searched for pagefile.sys and the results show a pagefile on only C: for 1GB. Like the OS is not creating the pagefile for D:.

Tonight I am going to go back to having the pagefile on D: only and deal with the error message. Hopfully this will correct the problem.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Am I thinking about this correctly? Why would I get these error messages regarding the pagefile? (Should have no problem moving the pagefile) I am also not experiencing any authentication errors across the network so I don't think it is a DC problem.

Here is a outline of the exchange envionment:

Dell PowerEdge R610

Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 SP1

Exchange Server 2010

16GB RAM

Thanks everyone, as I am going to work on this tonight any suggestions would be great. I will also post my results from my current plans.

Sudden Growth in Catalog Size on Mailbox server

$

Hello,

We are facing issue on our 2 mailbox servers, where on Database drive, there is sudden increase in Catalog Size.

We have 1 DAG with 2 mailbox servers and 6 databases.

I know there is way to delete this catalog folder by stopping Search service. But starting this service will again create one of the same size in some time.

Because this can sometimes may cause Database dismount, if drive gets full.

Any idea how to overcome this situation?

Thanks,

Mihir

Is there any browser specific limitation for exchange server 2010 OWA(Outlook Web Access) client for sending Embedded(Inline) image emails?

Requirement:

able to read the embedded image from email body using EWS(eachange web service) api and able to convert the email body into html format.

Problem:

While reading the Embedded image(inline) email from exchange server 2010 using EWS api , i am getting Attachment.IsInline property vaues is true and  Null values for Attachmnet.ContentType and ContentId properties.

but above behavior is different for different browsers for example, i am sending embedded image mail from IE8, then i want to read that mail from exchange 2010 using EWS api, then i am getting the above problem (null values for ContentType and ContentId) but

while sending same embedded image mail from IE9 its working fine.

Is there any browser specific limitation for exchange server 2010 OWA client?

and Is there any way to get the values of ContentType and ContentId?

How do i solve the above problem?

Thanks in Advance.

Exchange 2010 Tracking Delivery to Remote Server

$

We're partway through a migration from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2013. Currently we have our Exchange 2010 environment up and running for several weeks.

I'm trying to determine how to use the message tracking in Exchange 2010 to verify delivery of mail to a remote server.  In the 2003 message tracking I'd enter the recipient and the tool would check the logs and show if the message was successfully transferred to the remote host.  I'm trying to find the analog for this tracking in 2010 and so far have not been able to do so.  I've found the "Get-MessageTrackingLog - Recipients user@domain.com" powershell command, but it's not giving me the information I'm looking for.  Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Left ADSI Edit - Microsoft Exchange System Objects has reference to old server

I have a SBS2008 server that was migrated from an older Standard server.

In investigating some system errors in connecting the public folders, I found a reference to the old server in the  Microsoft Exchange System Objects.

it is the CN=EventConfig and shows as CN=EventConfig_OldServerName

I think this should be changed to the new server name. I tried to edit the object starting with the name, but when I apply it gives me an error saying "Operation failed. Attribute cannot be modified because it is owned by the system.

Do I need to create a new object and then delete the old, or is there some other easier way?

OldServerName has been completely wiped so not hope connecting it back.

Exchange SP3 crash

I was installing exchange 2010 sp3 and the last two steps failed. After a reboot, nobody can connect to exchange or rdp. The problem seems to be coming from the exchange prc service. It will not start, generates a 1067 error. Because this service won't start, neither will the www3svc and several other services dependent on the rpc service. Since this was a service pack problem, I was under the impression that support was free, but that is not correct. So, my company has no email and I'm reaching out for any ideas. I have a ton of 1008 and 4999 eventids.
